Public attitude toward potential of the Winter Olympics 2022 in Ukraine

On July 2, 2013 in "Ukrinform" CEO of Kiev International Institute of Sociology (KIIS), Vladimir Ilyich Paniotto, PhD, presented results of a study on the project: “Research on public attitude toward potential of the Winter Olympics 2022 in Ukraine”.
 

According to a survey results Ukrainian population is positive about the possibility to host the Winter Olympics 2022 in Ukraine. Almost 80% of respondents supported the idea of application to the International Olympic Committee for the right to host the Winter Olympics. The overwhelming majority of respondents considers that the Olympic Games will bring Ukraine improvements in all areas; first of all, it is about tourist attractiveness of Ukraine in general and Carpathians Region particularly (90% of Ukrainian citizens, who were able to value impact of the Olympic Games, emphasize positive developments exactly is in this area). Also, more than 90% of respondents predict increase of interest in winter sports, improvement of image of Ukraine in Europe and in the world and positive changes in reconstructions and constructions of sports facilities.

Winter Olympics - is the most ambitious and prestigious international competition of the winter sports which are held once per every four years under auspices of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Winter Olympics were founded in 1924. After the regular competition is over, there are always held the Paralympic Games for people with disabilities. Winter Olympics covers 18 world championships in seven sports during 16 days. They host approximately one million participants, visitors and tourists; and more than 3 billion viewers.
 
Other possible candidates to host the Olympic Winter Games 2022 are Norway (Oslo), Germany (Munich), Sweden (Stockholm).
 
The President of Ukraine signed the Decree ¹ 315 “On Measures to Create Conditions for Carrying Out the Winter Olympics 2022 and the Paralympic Games in Ukraine” on June 6th, 2013. Oleksandr Iuriiovych Vilkul, being the Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine, was appointed for the position of Head of Organizing Committee, responsible for preparation of application to the International Olympic Committee to obtain the right to host the Winter Olympics 2022 and Paralympic Games in Ukraine.
 
Representatives of country have to submit a declaration of intention of Ukraine to be a candidate to host the Winter Olympics 2022 by November; and March 2014 will be a time to send to the IOC a relevant application document.
