How Ukrainians plan to spend their vacations, June, 2014

Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) conducted a nationwide opinion poll from April 29 to May 11, 2014. 2022 respondents were surveyed in 110 settlements all over Ukraine (except Crimea) using a method of personal interviews; sample is random and representative for the Ukrainian population aged 18 years and older .

Statistical sampling error (with probability 0.95, design effect 1.5) does not exceed 3,3% for figures close to 50%, 2,8% for figures close to 25%, 2,0% for figures close to 10%, and 1.4% for figures close to 5%.

The survey showed that in May 2014, despite the situation in the country, the number of Ukrainians who were not planning to take vacations has decreased from 68% to 62% since 2013. The number of people who are not able to go anywhere also decreased from 21% to 17% in the same period (the difference is statistically significant). This change may be explained by the absence of Crimea in the survey sample this year.

In addition:

  • The top destinations for vacations are the Carpathian mountains and countryside houses (7% each);
  • 4% of respondents plan to go visit their relatives who live in the villages;
  • Despite the annexation of Crimea, 2% of Ukrainian respondents plan to spend their vacations there;
  • The amount of people planning to go abroad is 3%;
  • 15% of respondents have not decided anything about their vacations yet (which is two times higher than in 2013).

In terms of regional distribution [1]:

  • The amount of respondents who are not planning summer vacations this year is the largest in the Eastern region (68%), while the lowest is in the South (59%). For the Central and Western regions, the figures are equally distributed at 62% each.
  • Trip to the Carpathians or to other Ukrainian destinations are mostly planned by people from the West (12%) and from the South (9%), followed by the Central region (6%). This figure is the lowest in the East (2%).
  • Almost similar shares of people in the Eastern region (6%) and in the Central region (7%) plan to stay in countryside houses and cottages. This figure was the highest in the South (9%), while people who plan to do so in the Western region are only 4%.
  • There is no big difference in the regional context for vacations in the village visiting relatives - it's 5% for West and East and 4% in the Central and Southern regions.
  • Most of the people who plan vacations in Crimea are concentrated in the Eastern region (7%). There was only 1% of such people in Central and Southern regions and 2% in the West.
  • The largest number of those who plan to spend their holidays abroad is concentrated in the Western region (5%). There are 2% of these people in the Central and Southern regions, and in the East - 3%.
