Issues the Ukrainians are concerned about

Press release by Tatyana Piaskovska

On May 19-31 of 2016 Kyiv International Institute of Sociology conducted all-Ukrainian public opinion poll. We interviewed personally 2014 respondents living in 108 settlements of all regions (oblast`) of Ukraine (except for AR of Crimea). Sample is stochastic and representative for the population of Ukraine aged 18 and above.

In Luhansk and Donetsk regions study was conducted only on the territories that are controlled by Ukraine.

Statistic sample error (with probability 0.95 and design-effect of 1.5) does not exceed:

3.3% - for indicators close to 50%,

2.8% - for indicators close to 25%,

2.0% - for indicators close to 10%,

1.4% - for indicators close to 5%.

According to the results, the vast majority of respondents (72%) concerned about the war in the East of Ukraine. Also amongst the worrisome issues are standard of living (61%), the economic situation (46%), and security of Ukraine (15%).

Amongst the all listed issues, the least worrisome one is the status of Russian language in Ukraine (1%), this situation is observed in all regions of Ukraine.

By regions:

  • WarintheEastofUkraine is the most disturbing issue for residents of Western and Central regions (equally 78%). It is a little less distressing for residents of South and Eastern regions (equally 64%).

  • Standard of living is almost equally disturbing for residents of Western, Central and South regions (62%, 61%, and 63% respectively); the less worrying about it are residents of Eastern region (56%).

  • EconomicsituationinUkraineis the most distressing for residents of South (50%) and Eastern (49%) regions, and a little less disturbing – for residents of Central (43%) and Western (44%) regions.

  • Security of Ukraine is equally important issue for residents of all regions (Western – 22%, Central – 23%, South – 20%) except for Eastern one (18%).

  • Political situation in Ukraine is the most important for residents of Eastern (19%) and South (18%) regions, the least important – for residents of Central region (12%). It is distressing for 14% of respondents in Western region.

  • Relations with Russia are worrisome the most for residents in Eastern (18%) and South (16%) regions, the least – for people in Western region (10%).

  • Issue ofcriminalityis equally disturbing for all regions: Central, Eastern, Western regions – equally 13%, Central region– 14%.

By gender:

  • In most cases no significant differences in distress of men and women were found. There are disproportions concerning three issues: the standard of living and criminality are slightly more disturbing for women than men, the economic situation in Ukraine, on the contrary, is more worrisome for men. Standard of living – 65% of women vs. 55% of men, criminality – 15% of women vs. 12% of men, economic situation – 48% of men vs. 45% of women.
