Satisfaction with different aspects of life and how life is going on in general

By Yulia Sakhno

On May 26 – June 7, 2019, Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) conducted an own all-Ukrainian public opinion poll. Data were collected from 2021 respondents living in 110 settlements (PSU) in all oblasts of Ukraine (except for the AR of Crimea) with the method of personal interviewing. The sample was stochastic, 4-staged, and is representative of the population of Ukraine aged 18 and above.

In Luhansk and Donetsk oblasts survey was conducted only in the territories that are controlled by the Ukrainian government.

The statistical sampling error (with a probability of 0.95 and for a design effect of 1.5) does not exceed: 3.3% — for indexes close to 50%, 2.8% — for indexes close to 25%, 2.0% — for indexes close to 10%, 1.4% — for indexes close to 5%.

Satisfaction with different aspects of life

Out of various aspects of life, satisfaction with which was evaluated in the study, the majority of the Ukrainians are satisfied with their family, children, relationships with people around, personal life and their knowledge and skills. In particular, 77% are more or less satisfied with their family, 9% are more or less dissatisfied (the average satisfaction rate on a scale from 1 "completely unsatisfactory" to 5   “completely satisfactory” is 4.3 points). Also, 78% are satisfied with the behavior of their children, the development of children`s personal qualities, 6% of those who have kids are not satisfied (the average is 4.3). Further, 77% are satisfied with their behavior towards other people, 4% are not satisfied (the average is 4.2); 76% are satisfied with the attitude they receive from others, 6% are not satisfied (the average is 4.2). Also, 70% are satisfied with their knowledge, experience, skills, 7% are not satisfied (the average is 4.1); 63% are satisfied with their personal (intimate) life, 10% are not satisfied (the average is 4.1).

Mostly, respondents are rather satisfied than not satisfied with such aspects of life as available opportunities to be independent (58% satisfied, 13% dissatisfied, the average is 3.8), work (among those, who have a job: 63% satisfied, 17% not satisfied, the average is 3.7), opportunity to participate in public life (44% satisfied, 13% dissatisfied, the average is 3.7), living conditions (57% satisfied, 23% dissatisfied, the average is 3.5), opportunity to influence what is happening to them (50% satisfied, 19% dissatisfied, the average is 3.5).

The state of the environment and the possibility of self-realization satisfy the Ukrainians to a lesser extent. According to the survey, 42% are satisfied with the state of the natural environment in their neighborhood, 36% are not satisfied (the average is 3.1). The available possibilities to develop abilities satisfy 32% of respondents, while the same percentage (31%) are not satisfied (the average is 3.0).

The less satisfactory aspects for respondents are the level of well-being and security issues, confidence in the future. In particular, 22% are satisfied with the level of their financial security, 57% are not satisfied (the average is 2.4); 14% are satisfied with the confidence in the future, 62% are not satisfied (the average is 2.1). Also, 11% are satisfied with the security of Ukraine, 64% are not satisfied (the average is 2.0). The economic situation in Ukraine is satisfactory for 5% of respondents, and it is unsatisfactory for 83% (the average is 1.6).

Satisfaction with each of these aspects influences how satisfied people are with their life as a whole. From the listed aspects of life, life satisfaction is most closely correlated with satisfaction with the ability to exercise own abilities (Pearson correlation coefficient is 0.383), personal life (0.383), work (0.380), ability to influence what is happening to myself (0.366), material well-being (0.357).

* Aspects are ordered by decreasing average satisfaction score (on a scale from 1 – "completely unsatisfactory" to 5 – “completely satisfactory”)

Data of the study show that, compared to 2017, today the population of Ukraine is a little more satisfied with the level of personal freedom, the ability to influence their own lives and society. In particular, the level of satisfaction with public participation opportunities increased from 3.2 to 3.7 points (this aspect satisfied 32% of the population in 2017, 44% – in 2019, and it did not satisfy 22% – in 2017, 13% – in 2019), with the opportunity to be independent it increased from 3.5 to 3.8 points (45% were satisfied in 2017, 58% – in 2019, 17% were not satisfied in 2017, 13% – in 2019), with the opportunity to influence what is happening with them it increased from 3.3 to 3.5 points (42% were satisfied in 2017, 50% – in 2019, 21% were not satisfied in 2017, 19% – in 2019).

However, compared to 2017, the level of satisfaction with the state of the environment decreased from 3.3 to 3.1 points (44% of the population were satisfied with it in 2017, 42% – in 2019, and 26% were not satisfied with it in 2017, 36% – in 2019).

The average level of satisfaction with other aspects of life has remained virtually unchanged.

Satisfaction with how life is going on in general

Compared to 2017, the average level of satisfaction with life has increased slightly: the percentage of those who are satisfied with the way their lives are going on has increased from 39% to 48%, the average satisfaction rating increased from 3.3 to 3.4 points.

On average, young people are slightly more satisfied with their lives than older people: among young people (18-29 years), 58% are satisfied with the way their lives are going on, and 12% are not satisfied (the average is 3.7). Among people who are 30-49 years old, 51% are satisfied with the span of life, and 16% are dissatisfied (the average is 3.5); and among those who are over 50 years old, 41% are satisfied, 25% are not satisfied (the average is 3.2).

Also, life satisfaction depends on financial well-being: people with better financial status are more likely to say that they are more satisfied with the span of their life than the poor do. In particular, among respondents who said that they lack money even for food, 31% are satisfied with their lives, and 36% are not satisfied (the average is 2.9), among those who can afford expensive purchases, 67% are satisfied, and 10% are (the average is 3.8).
