According to a new poll by the National Democratic Institute (NDI), Ukrainians are more united than ever in the face of a full-scale Russian invasion. Ukrainians are committed to the country's democratic development, a historic 94 percent of respondents say that a fully functioning democracy is important to them. Despite the full-scale war, respondents show unprecedented optimism about Ukraine's future: 87 percent said they were optimistic about the country's future.

The full-scale Russian invasion is affecting people's lives and finances, with only 5 percent reporting that they live comfortably on their current income. Despite the difficult financial situation, Ukrainians do everything they can to support the Armed Forces and fellow citizens in need: 78 percent of respondents said they donated money to support the army, and 58 percent to humanitarian aid. More than half of the country sheltered or assisted internally displaced persons.

The vast majority of Ukrainians trust the Armed Forces and the leadership of the country.

Ninety-seven percent trust or completely trust the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and 85 percent trust President Volodymyr Zelenskyi. The Government and Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine also enjoy high trust – 56 and 40 percent, respectively. The level of trust is also reflected in a positive assessment of their activities.

Ukrainians are also united in their wishes and expectations for joining the European Union and NATO. Ninety percent of respondents at the national level want Ukraine to become a member of the European Union, with the lowest figures in the East and South at the level of 84 percent. The aspiration to join NATO is supported by the majority of respondents - 73 percent at the national level.

Ukrainians are demonstrably not interested in giving up their land for peace. The only acceptable scenario for ending the war for Ukrainians is for Ukraine to return the territory it controlled until 2014, which includes all of Donbas and Crimea (89 percent).

The nationwide survey was developed and conducted by the National Democratic Institute in Ukraine. Fieldwork was conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology from May 2 to 11, 2022, using a method of computer - assisted telephone interviews (CATI) with 2,500 completed interviews. The survey is representative only of the adult population currently living in Ukraine and using mobile phones. Territories that were not under the control of the government of Ukraine until February 24, 2022, were excluded from the research. The average error for the national sample does not exceed +/- 2.2%.
