Ukrainians’ thoughts on control of deputies and officials corruptness

Kyiv International Institute of Sociology conducted a survey of public opinion during the perion of February 23 – March 11, 2013, on a by-order basis. 2760 respondents were interviewed; the survey coveres all regions of Ukraine (including the city of Kyiv and Crimea); sample was random and representative for the population of Ukraine aged 18 years and older.

Statistical sample deviation (with probability of 0.95 and design-effect of 1.5) does not exceed:

2.8% for index close to 50%,
2.4% — for index close to 25%,
1.7% — for index close to 10%,
1.2% — for index close to 5%.

The results showed:

The vast majority of respondents (88.2%) agree that the laws against corruption in Ukraine are not effective since they are approved by the Verkhovna Rada, ie by deputies who are to be controlled by these laws as well. Also 65.5% of respondents totally agree with the above and 22.7% of respondents are likely to agree. There is no significant difference in distribution by sex, age and region factors.

The vast majority of respondents (88%) also agree that it is necessary to adopt an anti-corruption law through a referendum; this law to be designed with purpose to control expenses of officials and deputies of all levels, as well as their families and their relatives. 67.1% of respondents strongly agree with the above; and 20.9% are likely to agre. There is no significant difference in distribution by sex, age and region factors.

Application
