Opinion of Ukrainians on WTO accession

From February 8 to February 13, 2008 the Kiev International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) conducted All–Ukrainian poll. 2036 respondents at the age of 18 years and older living in all regions of Ukraine, Crimea and Kiev according to statistical selection were surveyed by the method of interview.

The statistical error of selection (with probability 0.95 and at design–effect 1.5) doesn't exceed the following: 3.5% for indicators which are close to 50%, 3,0% – for indicators which are close to 25%, 2,0% – for indicators which are close to 10% or 90%.

  • Almost half of respondents – 48% consider that Ukraine will be on «velvet» from entering to WTO, in two times less – 25% consider that Ukraine will be in a «loss». 27% of respondents could not answer this question.

  • Almost one third of respondents – 32% – consider that the main merit of the Ukrainian President in that Ukraine entered to WTO, half as much – 15% – of the Government of Yulia Tymoshenko. Only 6% of respondents support idea that the main merit belongs to the Government of Viktor Yanukovych and 5% – the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.

  • Among the respondents who consider that Ukraine will be on «velvet» from WTO accession, 44% consider accession to the WTO the merit of the President, 26% – Government of Yulia Tymoshenko, 5% – the Government of Viktor Yanukovych and 4% – the Verkhovna Rada.

  • More than half of respondents – 51% – believe that the priorities of Ukraine's foreign policy should be determined by the President of Ukraine.

  • This idea support 66% of the supporters of NUNS, 58% – Block of Yulia Tymoshenko, 46% – Block of Lytvyn, 44% – the Party of Regions and 33% – the Communist Party of Ukraine.

  • 21% believe that the priorities of Ukraine's foreign policy determined by the Parliament, 12% – by the Cabinet of Ministers.

  • 16% are undecided with the answer to the question.
