Dynamics of the attitudes of Ukrainians towards public opinion polls, December 2015

Press release prepared by Tatyana Piaskovska.

In a period of December 4-14, 2015 Kyiv International Institute of Sociology has conducted own public opinion poll “Omnibus”. Data were collected from 2022 respondents living in 110 settlements (PSU) in all regions of Ukraine except the Autonomous Republic of Crimea. Sample is stochastic and representative for the population of Ukraine aged 18 years and above.

The statistical sample error (with probability of 0.95 and design–effect of 1.5) does not exceed: 3.3% for indicators close to 50%, 2,8% – for indicators close to 25%, 2,0% – for indicators close to 10%, 1.4%  – for indicators close to 5%.

The poll in December, 2015 showed that half of the population (50%) trusts sociological organizations that have been working for a long time already, 10% do not trust sociological organizations, others do not think about it. Trust-mistrust rate for sociological surveys and trust-mistrust balance (percentage of those, who trust, minus percentage of those, who mistrust, equals +40%) is almost the same as it was in 2014.

In particular, survey showed that:

  • During the last 11 years level of trust in results of sociological polls conducted by organizations, that have been working for a long time and publish results of their surveys, amongst population of Ukraine was growing fast at first (from 36% in 2002 to 47% in 2004), and then was more or less the same with only few changes. Trust-mistrust balance for sociological centers (percentage of those, who trust, minus percentage of those, who mistrust) grew since 2013: +31% in November, 2013, then +39% in 2014, and +40% in 2015 (see graph 1)

  • There is no significant difference in distribution by gender, age, education, and regions of trust rates to sociological surveys

Volodymyr Paniotto, CEO of KIIS, professor of NaUKMA:

«The situation with trust to data of sociological surveys seems to be stable over the past 10 years, half of the population trusts sociologists. It would be good to have more support, although we have little chance to persuade those 10% who do not trust sociologists, we can concentrate on persuading those 40% who have not decided yet. However, considering the high rate of mistrust in social institutions, it is not too bad. Of course, we can not accurately compare the survey data on trust to sociologists and the data on trust to social institutions that we released last week. First of all, data on trust to sociologist nay be somewhat inflated because it can be assumed, that people, who do not trust sociological research, often refuse to participate in studies. Second, question was formulated differently in that research, and we do not know for sure how nuances of formulation influence the results. Nonetheless it can be said, that rate of trust in sociologists is lower than the trust rate for volunteers and church (and, possibly, the army), but higher than the one for social institutions and groups (for media and governmental structures, in particular) »
