Stressful situations in the lives of the Ukrainians, 2017

On December 1-14, 2017, Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) conducted its own public opinion poll. Data were collected from 2039 respondents living in all oblasts of Ukraine (except for the AR of Crimea) with the method of personal interviewing. In Luhansk and Donetsk oblasts survey was conducted only in the territories that are controlled by the Ukrainian government. The sample is representative of the population of Ukraine aged 18 and above.
The statistical sampling error (with a probability of 0.95 and for a design effect of 1.5) does not exceed: 3.3% — for indexes close to 50%, 2.8% — for indexes close to 25%, 2.0% — for indexes close to 10%, 1.4% — for indexes close to 5%.
The changes in the situation with stress in the lives of Ukrainians happened over the year is the subject of this press release.
According to a recent KIIS study, 53% of those polled experienced some sort of stressful situation in 2017. Compared to 2016, their number has decreased by 5 percentage points (in 2016 it was 58%). Compared to 2016, the number of those who survived the illness of relatives, death of relatives and lost faith in people has decreased.
The number of those who did not experience any stressful situation increased by 5 percentage points (it was 37% in 2016, it was 42% in 2017).
Most often in 2017, the Ukrainians were experiencing eight types of stressful situations:

Feeling of own helplessness - 13% of those polled, same percentage as in 2016

Serious illness of a significant other - 12% (was 13% in 2016)

Serious illness and surgery - 9% (decrease by 2 percentage points, was 11% in 2016)

Loss of belief in people, facing the meanness - 8% (decrease by 6 percentage points, was 14% in 2016)
-
Left with no livelihood - 8% (was 9% in 2016)
-
Overcame the death of a significant other - 7% (decrease by 2 percentage points, was 9% in 2016)
-
Job loss and forced unemployment - 7% (was 6% in 2016).

By gender:

In general, in 2017 women experienced more stressful situations than men did: 57% of women and 48% of men.

The percentage of those who experienced the feeling of own helplessness are twice bigger among women (16%) than among men (8%).

Also, there is a big gender difference in the case of overcoming the serious illness of a significant other: 15% of women, 8% of men.

Percentages of those who were through the illness and surgery is bigger among women (11%) than among men (7%).

The percentage of those who became unintentionally unemployed is more than twice bigger among men than among women (9% and 4%, respectively).
By age:
- People of the age group 60+ more often than other age groups (see the Addition) suffer from serious illnesses and surgery (14%), serious illness and surgery of a significant others (13%), death of a significant other (7%), feeling of own helplessness (11%), being left with no livelihood (6%).
