Stressful situations in life of Ukrainians, 2014
Maksim IEnin, fellow of theKiev International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) From December 6 to December 17, 2014 the Kiev International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) conducted All–Ukrainian poll of public opinion. There were interviewed 2011 respondents aged 18 and older, living in all regions of Ukraine (including Kiev), except the Autonomous Republic of Crimea. Survey was conducted only in areas controlled by Ukraine in Lugansk region. Survey was conducted in both areas of Donetsk region: territories controlled by Ukraine and territories that are not controlled by Ukraine. The selection is representative for the population of Ukraine aged 18 years and older. The statistical error of selection (with probability 0.95 and at design–effect 1.5) doesn't exceed the following: 3.5% for indicators which are close to 50%, 2,8% – for indicators which are close to 25%, 2,0% – for indicators which are close to 10%, 1.4% – close to 5%. How has the situation changed with stress in the life of Ukrainians in the last year? It is the theme of this press release. According to a recent study by the Kiev International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) 61.9% of the respondents during the year experienced some stressful situations. Compared to 2013 year their number has increased significantly - by almost 10% (from 52% in 2013 to 61.9% in 2014). A lot of people in 2014 were in situations of shelling and bombing cases (7.1%). It was increased the number of people who have found themselves without a livelihood (from 4.8% in 2013 to 6.2% in 2014) or lost their jobs (6% in 2013 to 8% in 2014). Most times in 2014 Ukrainians experienced eight kinds of stressful situations: • 11.7% of respondents felt helpless (in 2013 the same - 11%). • 8.0% respondents lost their jobs and were forced unemployed in 2014. It is more than in 2013. It is more on 2% than last year (in 2013 - 6.0 and the difference between data is significant at the 5% level). • The death of loved 6.2% of respondents experienced (in 2013 - 7%, difference is not significant). • 8.4% polled respondents lost faith in people (in 2013 the same - 8.9%). • 7.2% of respondents experienced serious illness and surgery (in 2013 - 9%, difference between the data is significant at the 5% level). • 7.1% of respondents experienced shelling and bombing, respectively. • 6.2% of respondents experienced the death of loved (in 2013 - 7%, difference is not significant). • 6.3% of respondents found themselves without a livelihood (in 2013 - 4.8%, the difference is significant at the 5% level). According to the gender: • In general, women experienced little more stressful situations throughout the year: among the respondents 64.1% of men experienced stressful situations, women - 66.5%. More women (8.6%, 11% and 7.4%) than men (5.5%, 8.6%, and 4.7 %) suffered from serious illness, surgery and illness of loved ones, death of loved ones. Probably it is connected to the fact that women live longer in Ukraine than men. The older age people experienced more stressful situations. • More women (6.5%) have found themselves without a livelihood than men (5.8%) • More men than women (9.5% and 6.7% respectively) affected by unemployment. • Equal numbers of men and women answered that suffered from shelling and bombing - 7.1%. According to the age: • People over 60 are more often faced with illnesses, operations (17.9%), diseases and operations of loved ones (14.6%), the death of loved ones (7.4%), more than others feel helpless (12.9 %). According to the regions: • Considerably more affected by stress in the Eastern region (73.3%). In the Western region - 70.7%; Central region - 48%, Southern region - 60.6%. • In the Eastern region people felt their helplessness more than people from other region - 14.1%, in the Western regions - 13.5%; in the Central region - 6.9%, in the Southern region - 13.8%. • In comparison with other regions people of the Eastern region is much more experienced bombing or shelling - 28.1%. In the Western region - 0.8%; Central region - 0.2%; Southern region - 2.2%. • People of Eastern region - 11.0% more than people others regions found themselves without a livelihood. In the second position by the number of affected people of the southern region is 6.8%. In the Western part of Ukraine is 3.3%; in the Central part of Ukraine - 4,5%. • 2% people in the Western and 9% in the Southern regions experienced a serious illness and surgery in comparison with 7% people in Central and Eastern parts of Ukraine.
