Opinion of the population of Ukraine for a referendum on Ukraine's accession to NATO

From February 8 to February 13, 2008 the Kiev International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) conducted All-Ukrainian poll of public opinion. 2035 respondents at the age of 18 years and older living in all regions of Ukraine, Crimea and Kiev according to statistical selection were surveyed by the method of interview.

The statistical error of selection (with probability 0.95 and at design-effect 1.5) doesn't exceed the following: 3.5% for indicators which are close to 50%, 3,0% – for indicators which are close to 25% or 75%, 2,0% – for indicators which are close to 10% or 90%.

 

  • 21% of respondents said that referendum on Ukraine's accession to NATO is not needed at all. Another 37% expressed the need to postpone such a referendum until the population is sufficiently informed about NATO.

  • 10% believe that the referendum should be postponed for 2-3 years.

  • Only 18% of respondents believe that the referendum on joining NATO is advisable to carry out this year.

  • 15% don’t have a definite opinion

  • 29% of the supporters of the Communist Party of Ukraine, 20% – the Party of Regions, 18% – Bloc of Litvin, 16% – NUNS and Bloc of Julia Tymoshenko believe that such a referendum is not needed at all.

  • 47% of supporters of NUNS, 43% – Bloc of Julia Tymoshenko, 42% – Bloc of Litvin, 33% – Party of Regions and 30% – the Communist Party consider that it is appropriate to postpone the referendum on joining NATO until the people is not sufficiently informed about NATO.
