Support of the recognition of OUN-UPA as participants of struggle for the state independence of Ukraine
On September 16 – October 1, 2017, Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) conducted the all-Ukrainian public opinion poll. Data were collected from 2040 respondents living in 108 settlements in all oblasts of Ukraine (except for the AR of Crimea) with the method of personal interviewing. The sample was stochastic, 4-staged, and is representative of the population of Ukraine aged 18 and above. In Luhansk and Donetsk oblasts survey was conducted only in the territories that are controlled by the Ukrainian government. The statistical sampling error (with a probability of 0.95 and for a design effect of 1.5) does not exceed: 3.3% — for indexes close to 50%, 2.8% — for indexes close to 25%, 2.0% — for indexes close to 10%, 1.4% — for indexes close to 5%.
Since 2015, members of the OUN-UPA (Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists – Ukrainian Insurgent Army) have been maintaining the status of fighters for the independence of Ukraine in the twentieth century. Among the adult population of Ukraine, 41% of polled support or rather support such recognition, 27% - rather against or against it, 26% of respondents had difficulty answering this question and 6% refused to respond to it at all.
In general, 47% of males support the recognition of the OUN-UPA as participants in the struggle for Ukraine's state independence, while this percentage is lower for females - 35%. This trend is observed among all age groups, the largest difference is 16% that exist between men and women over the age of 70. Respondents aged 40-49 show the biggest support for this recognition (49%), the least support show people aged 60-69 years (33%). The share of respondents who also support the recognition of OUN-UPA as participants in the struggle for the state independence of Ukraine aged 18-29 is 43%, 30 - 39 years old - 39%, 50-59 years old - 40%, and respondents aged 70 and older - 36%.
One can see some connection between the level of well-being and the recognition of the OUN-UPA as the participants in the struggle for Ukraine's state independence. Among those with the worst standard of living, 34% support the recognition; among people with an income level that is slightly higher than the low - 37%; those surveyed with an middle income support recognition in 48% of cases; and among people with a relatively high level of material welfare (can afford to buy expensive things) - 49%.
* Note: During the analysis, the category of those who chose the answer "We can afford to buy everything we want" was combined with the category "We can afford to buy some valuable things" because of the insignificant fullness of the first group. The recognition of OUN-UPA as participants in the struggle for the independence of Ukraine in receives major support in the Western region - 66%, in the Central region it is 39%, in the South - 29%, and the smallest percentage of support comes from the Eastern region - 13%.
Among those who live in rural areas, the percentage of those supporting the recognition of the OUN-UPA as participants in the struggle for state independence of Ukraine is 46%. In turn, among residents of the urban population, it is smaller by 9 percentage points - 37%.
